Moving guide
Moving House with Children and Pets
Children and pets experience the same move differently from adults: routines disappear, doors stay open and unfamiliar people carry familiar things away. A separate care and first-night plan reduces risk and gives the moving team a clear, quiet route.

Prepare without creating uncertainty
Explain the move in age-appropriate terms and show children the new home or area where possible. Keep school, sleep and meal routines stable. Let them choose a small group of belongings that stays with them. For pets, update identification details and ask a vet about travel or stress if there is a health concern. Check rules for animals at temporary accommodation or rented property well ahead of the move.
Arrange care for loading hours
The safest plan is often for children and pets to stay with a trusted person away from open doors, tools, vehicles and heavy lifting. If that is not possible, designate one closed room or secure area that is never used as a route, with one adult responsible for it. Put a clear sign on the door and tell the move lead. Cats and small animals need secure carriers; dogs should remain controlled and never be tied near the loading path.
Pack a separate care bag
Keep medicines, food, water, bowls, nappies, comfort items, bedding, favourite toys, leads, litter supplies and cleaning materials with you. Add health and contact records and a recent pet photograph. Do not pack the items needed for the journey or first night into the removal vehicle. Plan suitable breaks and temperatures during travel, and never leave an animal unattended in a vehicle. Confirm that the destination is secure before opening a carrier.
Settle the new home in stages
Prepare one familiar room first with bedding, food and comfort objects while unloading continues elsewhere. Check fences, balconies, windows, doors and potential hiding places. Keep pets indoors or supervised according to professional advice while they learn the new environment. Give children a simple job away from lifting, such as checking labelled room signs. Expect some disruption after the move and keep essential routines consistent. Store move documents where adults can reach them without unpacking every box.
